ipxeefi

ipxeefi is a community-maintained port of the iPXE open source network boot firmware that targets EFI-based systems running UEFI. It provides a UEFI-compatible, network boot environment by shipping an EFI application that can be loaded by the UEFI firmware either through a standard Network Boot (PXE) path or by chainloading from another boot manager. The project aims to bring iPXE’s feature set to environments where UEFI is the primary boot interface.

ipxeefi shares the same scripting language and protocol support as iPXE, including HTTP(S) boot, TFTP, iSCSI, FTP, and NBD transports. Once loaded, it can fetch kernel and initramfs images over HTTP(S) and boot Linux or other operating systems. It also supports iPXE's scripting for automated installations and network-based boot menus. The EFI build targets x86_64 and ARM64 platforms and integrates with standard UEFI boot managers and secure boot where supported by the environment.

Distribution and licensing: ipxeefi is released under the GNU General Public License (same as iPXE) and is maintained by a community of contributors separate from the official iPXE project. It is commonly used in data centers, labs, and educational deployments for diskless clients, OS installation, and test environments that require network-based booting over HTTP or other protocols.

Relation to iPXE: ipxeefi is not an official iPXE release; it is a port that adapts the iPXE codebase to EFI/UEFI boot flows. The project’s status and feature completeness vary by build and version. Users should verify hardware compatibility, driver support, and protocol requirements for their target systems.
