Inversesaturation is a term used to describe the inverse operation to a saturation step in color science and image processing. It refers to the idea of recovering or estimating the original chroma information that has been altered by a saturation function, or to applying an inverse mapping to a saturated color value.

Definition and concept. In color models such as HSV or HSL, a color is described by hue, saturation, and value or lightness. If a processing pipeline applies a saturation function to chroma, producing an output saturation parameter, the inverse operation would aim to recover the input saturation that produced that output. The inverse exists mathematically only if the saturation function is bijective over the considered domain; in practice, many saturation operations involve clipping or nonlinearity, which can prevent exact inversion.

Mathematical perspective. If a saturation function is monotone and invertible on its domain, inverse saturation can be computed analytically or numerically (for example, using a simple linear or fractional-power mapping). When saturation is followed by clipping to a maximum value, the inverse becomes more complex or undefined for values that were clipped.

Applications and limitations. Inversesaturation is relevant in color correction, restoration of over-saturated images, and color research where there is interest in estimating original chroma. However, exact recovery is often impossible without additional information or priors, because information may be irretrievably lost through clipping or non-linear processing. Approximate restoration can be attempted through statistical methods, priors about typical color distributions, or joint estimation with luminance and hue.
