Intraneuronal refers to processes, structures, or substances located within a neuron. The term is used to distinguish anything inside neurons from elements in the extracellular space or outside the cell. In neuroscience, intraneuronal describes localization of proteins and signaling molecules, organelles, and the various intracellular processes that occur inside neuronal compartments such as the soma, dendrites, and axons.

Physiological intraneuronal processes include intracellular signaling cascades initiated by receptors at the cell surface, calcium dynamics, and other second messenger systems. Intraneuronal transport moves vesicles, organelles, and proteins along cytoskeletal tracks within neurons, particularly along axons and dendrites. Metabolic activities, protein synthesis, and organellar function also occur intraneuronally and are essential for neuronal maintenance and signaling.

In pathology, intraneuronal accumulations refer to abnormal proteins or inclusions that form inside neurons, often associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Examples include intraneuronal neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau in Alzheimer's disease and intraneuronal Lewy bodies containing alpha-synuclein in Parkinson's disease. Such intracellular aggregates can impair neuronal function, disrupt synaptic connectivity, and contribute to disease progression.

Detection and study of intraneuronal phenomena rely on techniques that visualize intracellular components, such as immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy, as well as molecular and biochemical assays conducted on brain tissue or cultured neurons. The concept is primarily descriptive, emphasizing the location of processes or pathological features within neurons as distinct from extracellular or intranuclear contexts.
