Intonacioni refers to the study and system of pitch variation in speech across phrases and sentences. It encompasses rising, falling, and level contours of the speaker’s voice, which interact with syntax, semantics, and discourse. In some languages, pitch differences function as lexical tones on syllables; in intonacioni analysis the focus is on the suprasegmental layer that signals sentence type, emphasis, modality, and discourse relations.

Key concepts include intonational phrases, boundary tones, nuclear accents, and contour shapes. An utterance is often divided into intonational phrases, each carrying a stress pattern and a boundary tone that marks its edge. The main contour types are rising and falling, but complex contours can combine both. The nucleus, or focal accent, carries the most important information for the speaker at that moment.

Functions: Intonacioni helps distinguish declaratives from questions, statements from commands, and yes-no from wh- questions. It signals focus and information structure, expresses attitude or emotion, and helps structure discourse by indicating topic or given/new information.
