Interseksuaalsus refers to variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. These variations can include differences in chromosomes, gonads, hormones, or genitals. Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a range of natural variations. It is not a medical condition in itself, although some intersex variations may be associated with specific health considerations.

People are born intersex. Their intersex variations are natural and part of their biological diversity. Intersex variations occur in approximately 1.7% of the population, though the exact prevalence can vary depending on the definition used.

Intersex is not about gender identity or sexual orientation. An intersex person can identify as male, female, both, neither, or another gender. Similarly, their sexual orientation can be diverse. Intersex is about biological sex characteristics.

Historically, medical interventions have sometimes been performed on intersex infants and children without their consent. These interventions, often referred to as "normalizing" surgeries, aimed to make the individual's sex characteristics conform to societal expectations of either male or female. However, there is growing recognition that such procedures can cause physical and psychological harm, and many intersex advocates call for an end to non-consensual medical interventions.

The intersex community advocates for bodily autonomy, the right to self-determination, and an end to discrimination and stigma. Understanding and acceptance of intersex variations are crucial for fostering an inclusive society.
