Depending on the category, protection may require registration or arise automatically through creation and fixed form.

Key instruments include the Berne and Paris Conventions, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the Madrid System for trademarks, the Hague Agreement for designs, and the TRIPS Agreement under the World Trade Organization.
