Instruktionsnivåparallellism, often abbreviated as ILP, refers to the technique of executing multiple instructions simultaneously during program execution. This is a fundamental concept in computer architecture aimed at improving the overall performance of a processor. The goal is to increase the throughput of instructions, meaning more instructions are completed per unit of time.

There are several ways ILP can be achieved. One common method is pipelining, where different stages of instruction execution (fetch, decode, execute, write-back) are overlapped. While one instruction is in the execute stage, the next instruction can be in the decode stage, and so on. Another technique is instruction-level parallelism, which involves identifying independent instructions within a program's instruction stream and executing them in parallel on multiple execution units within the processor. This requires sophisticated hardware to detect dependencies between instructions and schedule them appropriately. Superscalar processors are a prime example of hardware that leverages ILP, as they contain multiple execution pipelines. Out-of-order execution is another related concept where the processor reorders instructions to keep execution units busy, even if there are data dependencies that would normally stall the pipeline. Effective exploitation of ILP is crucial for modern high-performance processors.
