Instancesled is a term used in distributed systems to describe a pattern for coordinating multiple runtime instances of a service across a cluster. The concept centers on a centralized, ledger-like data store, referred to as the sled, which records per-instance metadata, workload metrics, and assignment state. By providing a single source of truth, instancesled simplifies task distribution, health tracking, and rollout strategies in dynamic environments such as cloud containers or serverless platforms.

Architecture of an instancesled system typically includes a control plane, a sled that serves as the authoritative state store, and lightweight agents running on each service instance. The control plane runs scheduling and policy logic, while agents report health, capabilities, and metrics. The sled stores records for each instance, including identity, readiness, current workload, and task assignments. Scheduling decisions are made by the control plane and propagated to agents through the sled or through a pub/sub mechanism.

Operations commonly supported include registration and deregistration of instances, heartbeats or liveness checks, task assignment and migration, automatic scaling based on load, and fault handling such as reassigning tasks from failed instances. Variants of the pattern may emphasize time-based rollouts, event-driven triggers, or localized leadership to reduce latency.

Applications of instancesled include microservice fleets requiring dynamic scaling, canary or blue-green deployments, and environments with frequent instance churn. While it offers a clear single source of truth and improved observability, it can introduce centralization risks and latency considerations in large clusters.
