Inseparability refers to the quality of a system or phenomenon that cannot be divided into independently functioning parts without losing essential characteristics. It describes a situation in which the properties of the whole cannot be understood simply by analyzing its components in isolation. Inseparability is often discussed in contrast to separability, the idea that complex systems can be decomposed into independently interacting parts.

In philosophy and systems theory, inseparability is associated with holism and emergent properties. Holists argue that some behaviors, patterns, or properties only arise when components interact within a system, and cannot be deduced from the parts alone. Reductionists challenge this, but many disciplines acknowledge a degree of inseparability in complex adaptive systems, social structures, and ecosystems.

In physics, inseparability is most closely linked to quantum entanglement. When two or more particles are entangled, their joint state cannot be written as a product of states of the individual particles; measurements on one particle influence outcomes for the other, regardless of distance. Entangled states exhibit correlations that cannot be explained by local hidden variables, illustrating the inseparability of the composite system.

In social sciences and other domains, inseparability can describe the interdependence of actors and contexts, such as individuals within families or communities where outcomes depend on networked relations.
