An innholder, also referred to as an innkeeper in modern usage, is a person who owns or operates an inn, hostelry, or lodging house. The innholder is responsible for managing the establishment, providing lodging, meals, and hospitality to travellers and guests, and for supervising staff and day-to-day operations.

Historically, innholders played a central role in travel networks, particularly in Britain and other parts of Europe and North America. Coaching inns along major routes offered overnight accommodation, stabling for horses, and provisioning for travellers. Innholders often acted as cashiers, hosts, and local businessmen, maintaining accounts, negotiating with suppliers, and ensuring the safety and cleanliness of premises. In some periods they also supplied post horses as part of postal or stagecoach services.

Etymology: The term derives from inn + holder, referring to the proprietor who holds or owns the inn. In historical texts the term innholder was commonly used; today innkeeper is more common in American English, while innholder may appear in legal or archival contexts.

Legal and regulatory aspects: Innholders were and are subject to licensing requirements, health and safety standards, food service regulations, and alcohol licensing in jurisdictions that permit public houses.

Modern usage: While many inns have transformed into hotels or pub-hotels, some establishments retain the historic term; the word innholder is now largely literary or archival.
