Core activities include inventory management, supplier evaluation, and forecasting; color management and ink compatibility with substrates; workflow integration with ERP or MIS systems; monitoring ink consumption and optimizing replenishment; and waste handling, recycling, and compliance with safety regulations.

Common tools and practices include barcode or RFID tracking of ink containers, automatic reordering thresholds, concentration and mixing controls, and color profiling using ICC profiles; quality control includes nozzle checks and batch testing for ink stability.

Challenges include volatile ink pricing, storage stability and shelf life, contamination risks, regulatory obligations for hazardous substances, and safety concerns for handling pigments and solvents. Sustainability efforts emphasize recycling of empty cartridges, transitioning to water-based or soy-based inks where appropriate, and reducing VOC emissions.
