Inimlikus refers to a concept rooted in Estonian folklore and traditional beliefs, often associated with the idea of a malevolent or harmful spirit, entity, or supernatural force. The term can be broadly interpreted to encompass various forms of malevolence, including curses, hexes, or malevolent influences believed to cause misfortune, illness, or harm to individuals or communities. In Estonian culture, such beliefs were deeply embedded in daily life, shaping practices related to protection, healing, and social interactions.

The origins of inimlikus are tied to animistic and shamanistic traditions, where natural phenomena and human experiences were often attributed to unseen spiritual forces. These forces were thought to include both benevolent and harmful entities, with inimlikus representing the latter. For instance, certain places, objects, or even people might be considered inimlikus if they were believed to carry a destructive influence. This belief could stem from perceived misfortune, unexplained illnesses, or conflicts within a community.

In traditional Estonian practices, methods to counteract inimlikus included rituals, charms, and the use of protective symbols or talismans. Shamans or folk healers, known as *rahvastearstid* (folk healers), were often consulted to diagnose and remove such malevolent influences. These healers might employ techniques such as cleansing rituals, the use of specific plants, or reciting protective incantations. Additionally, social taboos and customs, such as avoiding certain behaviors or interactions, were observed to prevent attracting inimlikus.
