Inhomogenitet, also known as inhomogeneity, describes the property of a system that is not uniform in composition, structure, or physical properties across space (and sometimes time). In a homogeneous medium, parameters such as density, elasticity, conductivity, or chemical composition are constant everywhere; in an inhomogeneous medium, these parameters vary from location and can lead to complex behavior.

This concept is used across many disciplines. In materials science, most real materials are inhomogeneous to some degree, with variations in microstructure, porosity, or phase distribution that affect mechanical strength, diffusion, and failure modes. In geosciences and geology, rock and soil properties vary with depth and lateral position, influencing seismic wave propagation, groundwater flow, and resource assessment. In biology, tissues and organs often exhibit spatial heterogeneity in cell density, extracellular matrix, and perfusion, impacting diagnostics and treatment planning. In physics and engineering, inhomogeneous fields—such as temperature, concentration, or electromagnetic fields—arise from boundary conditions and external inputs.

Mathematically, an object is inhomogeneous when its governing equations or statistical properties depend on position. An inhomogeneous material may be modeled with spatially varying coefficients or via nonstationary stochastic processes. Techniques such as homogenization attempt to approximate an inhomogeneous medium by an effective homogeneous one under certain scales and conditions.

Understanding inhomogenitet is crucial for accurate modeling, design, and analysis, as spatial variations can dominate transport, mechanical response, and signal propagation, and neglected inhomogeneity can lead to erroneous predictions.
