Infrapunateraapia, or infrared therapy, refers to the therapeutic use of infrared radiation to heat body tissues and, in some approaches, influence cellular processes. Devices emit infrared energy in near-, mid-, or far-infrared bands and are used in clinical and home settings to relieve pain, reduce muscle tension, and support tissue healing.

The primary mechanism is thermal: increased local blood flow, vasodilation, and accelerated metabolic activity in the warmed area, which can reduce stiffness and promote relaxation. Some applications also cite non-thermal photobiomodulation effects at specific wavelengths, though the biological basis and clinical relevance remain debated.

Applications typically include musculoskeletal pain management (back, neck, shoulder, tendinopathies), temporary improvement in joint mobility after injury, and adjunctive support for wound healing or skin conditions. Evidence from clinical studies is mixed; many trials report modest pain relief or functional gains, while others show little difference from controls. Infrared therapy is generally used as an adjunct to standard care rather than a stand-alone cure.

Safety and limitations: common risks are skin burns with excessive exposure and eye injury if directly viewed. People with diminished sensation, open wounds, or photosensitive conditions should avoid or limit use, and devices should be used according to manufacturer guidance. Infrared therapy is typically considered an adjunct to conventional medical care rather than a replacement for established treatments.
