Infovahetus, or infovahetust in Estonian, refers to the process of exchanging information between organizations, systems, or individuals. It encompasses the methods, protocols, and agreements that enable data to be transferred reliably, securely, and in a usable form. Infovahetust can be internal (within an organization) or external (between organizations, agencies, or sectors) and may involve structured data (databases, schedules) and unstructured data (documents, emails).

Key components include data governance, interoperability, and security. Interoperability requires common data models, standards, and vocabularies, such as EDI, HL7 in healthcare, XML/JSON, and metadata schemes. Security and privacy considerations cover authentication, authorization, encryption, audit trails, and compliance with laws (for example GDPR in the EU). Data sharing agreements define purpose limitation, data minimization, retention, and responsibilities. Common modalities include electronic data interchange (EDI), API-based data sharing, data feeds, and federated queries. Data quality, lineage, and metadata are important to ensure the data remains accurate and usable across contexts.

Infovahetust can serve many purposes: operational efficiency, policy making, research, or public transparency, but it also poses risks of data leakage, misinterpretation, or bias if not managed properly. In practice, successful infovahetus relies on governance frameworks, technical standards, secure infrastructure, and ongoing collaboration among data owners, stewards, and users.
