Inflasjon describes the general increase in prices of goods and services in an economy over a period of time. When inflation occurs, a unit of currency buys fewer goods and services than it did in prior periods. Consequently, inflation can erode purchasing power over time.

The most commonly cited measure of inflation is the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. Other measures include the Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures the average changes in prices received by domestic producers for their output, and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which is a broader measure of price changes for goods and services purchased by consumers.

Inflation can be caused by several factors. Demand-pull inflation occurs when there is too much money chasing too few goods, leading to higher prices. Cost-push inflation happens when the costs of production, such as wages or raw materials, increase, forcing businesses to raise prices. Built-in inflation is often linked to wage-price spirals, where workers demand higher wages to keep up with rising prices, and businesses then raise prices to cover higher labor costs.

Moderate inflation is generally considered healthy for an economy, as it can encourage spending and investment. However, high or unpredictable inflation can be detrimental, leading to economic instability, reduced investment, and a decline in living standards. Deflation, the opposite of inflation, where prices fall, can also be problematic, potentially leading to decreased spending and economic stagnation. Central banks often use monetary policy tools to manage inflation and keep it at a target level.
