Imuilmajärjestelmän, which translates to "intake air system" or "air intake system," refers to the components of an internal combustion engine responsible for drawing in ambient air and delivering it to the cylinders. This system is crucial for the combustion process, as a sufficient and clean supply of air is necessary for fuel to burn efficiently and produce power.

The typical intake air system begins with an air intake opening, often located at the front or side of the vehicle to capture the coolest and cleanest air possible. This air then passes through an air filter, designed to remove dust, debris, and other contaminants that could damage engine components or reduce performance. After filtration, the air travels through an intake manifold, a series of pipes that distribute the air to each cylinder. In turbocharged or supercharged engines, the intake air system also includes a turbocharger or supercharger, which forces more air into the cylinders than would be possible naturally. Intercoolers are often employed in forced induction systems to cool the compressed intake air, making it denser and further improving combustion efficiency. Sensors within the intake air system, such as the mass airflow sensor (MAF) and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, provide data to the engine control unit (ECU) to precisely manage fuel injection and ignition timing.
