Impedantiemeters are instruments designed to measure impedance, the complex opposition that a circuit, component, or material presents to alternating current. They typically apply a known AC excitation to the test object and sense the resulting voltage and current in order to infer the complex impedance Z = R + jX, where R is resistance and X is reactance. From Z, the instrument provides the magnitude |Z| and the phase angle, which together reveal both resistive and reactive properties.

There are several common implementations. LCR meters measure inductance, capacitance, and resistance at one or several fixed frequencies. Impedance analyzers and impedance spectrometers extend this capability to wide frequency ranges and provide plots such as Nyquist or Bode diagrams to characterize frequency-dependent behavior. Four-terminal (four-probe) configurations are often used to minimize the influence of lead and contact impedances.

Measurement techniques include bridge methods, network analysis, and time-domain approaches that are transformed into impedance data. Impedantiemeters are used in diverse fields, including electronics testing, materials science (dielectric spectroscopy), corrosion monitoring, quality control in manufacturing, and biomedical or chemical sensing where tissue or solution impedance is informative.

Limitations include frequency and temperature dependence, electrode polarization effects in biological and chemical samples, contact impedance, and the need for calibration and proper probing. Advances in impedance spectroscopy and broadband impedance analysis continue to expand the range and accuracy of impedantiemeters.
