Impalcature are assembled around buildings, interiors, or industrial installations and are designed to be dismantled after the work is completed.

Typical components include vertical uprights, horizontal ledgers or frames, and working platforms made of boards or panels. Safety features such as guardrails and toe boards are incorporated to prevent falls, while couplings, clamps, base plates, and stabilizers ensure stability and load distribution. Materials commonly used are steel or aluminum for strength and lightness, with wooden platforms still seen in some contexts depending on local practice and regulation.

Main configurations encompass scaffolding frames (impalcatura a telaio), tubular scaffolding (impalcatura tubolare, or tubi e giunti), and suspended scaffolding (ponteggio sospeso). Fixed scaffolding surrounds a building, while mobile towers provide temporary access inside or around structures. The choice of configuration depends on factors such as height, load requirements, workspace constraints, and the nature of the task.

Safety and regulation are central to the use of impalcatura. Work at height is governed by national and European standards and regulations, such as Italy’s Decreto Legislativo 81/2008 and relevant EN standards.
