An imbalancer is a component, feature, or factor that causes imbalance within a system. In mechanical engineering, it most often refers to a mass or structure offset from a rotation axis, producing static or dynamic imbalance in rotating components such as shafts, rotors, or fans. The term can also describe a device whose function is to create artificial imbalance for testing or demonstration.

Static imbalance occurs when a mass is unevenly distributed around the axis of rotation, causing the center of gravity to lie off-axis. Dynamic imbalance involves mass distribution errors that affect multiple planes and lead to complex vibration. Causes include manufacturing tolerances, assembly errors, wear, material fatigue, and temperature changes.

Imbalance leads to vibrations, noise, reduced efficiency, bearing wear, and potential failure. Detection methods include vibration analysis, balancers or balancing machines, and run-up tests. Mitigation includes adding counterweights (balancers), reshaping parts, repositioning components, or using dynamic balancing procedures that balance in one or more planes.

In practice, imbalancers are considered during design and maintenance for rotating equipment in automotive engines, turbines, and fans. In some test setups, deliberate imbalancers are used to simulate operating conditions.
