Ilmavoimajäähdytys, also known as air cooling, is a method of removing heat from a system using air as the primary cooling medium. This process is widely employed in various applications, from everyday electronics to industrial machinery. The fundamental principle involves facilitating the flow of cooler air over a heat-generating component, thereby transferring thermal energy from the component to the air.

There are several common techniques used in ilmavoimajäähdytys. Natural convection occurs when warmer air, being less dense, rises and is replaced by cooler air. This passive method is often sufficient for low-power devices. Forced convection, on the other hand, utilizes fans or blowers to actively circulate air, significantly enhancing the rate of heat dissipation. This is crucial for more demanding applications where natural airflow would be inadequate.

Heat sinks are frequently incorporated into air-cooled systems. These are typically metal components with extended surfaces, such as fins or pins, designed to increase the surface area exposed to the air. This larger surface area allows for more efficient heat transfer from the source to the air. The materials used for heat sinks are usually good thermal conductors like aluminum or copper.
