Ilmajäähdyttimiin, known in English as air coolers or swamp coolers, are devices that cool air through evaporation. They are a type of evaporative cooler. The basic principle behind their operation is that as water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air, thus lowering the air temperature.

An air cooler typically consists of a water tank, a pump, a fan, and absorbent pads. The pump circulates water from the tank to the pads, keeping them wet. The fan then draws warm air from the room through the wet pads. As the air passes through the moist pads, water evaporates, and the air is cooled and humidified. The cooler, moist air is then blown back into the room.

These devices are most effective in dry climates where the relative humidity is low. In high humidity environments, the evaporation process is less efficient, and the cooling effect is significantly reduced, potentially leading to an uncomfortable increase in humidity.

Ilmajäähdyttimiin are generally more energy-efficient than traditional air conditioning units, as they do not use refrigerants and have simpler mechanical components. They also tend to be less expensive to purchase and operate. However, their cooling capacity is typically less powerful than that of air conditioners, making them more suitable for smaller spaces or for providing a mild cooling effect rather than significant temperature reduction. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the water tank and replacing the pads, is necessary to ensure efficient operation and prevent the growth of mold or bacteria.
