Ilmajäähdytin, often referred to as an air cooler, is a type of cooling device that uses the evaporation of water to reduce the temperature of air. Unlike traditional air conditioners that use refrigerants and a compressor, air coolers are simpler and more energy-efficient. They draw in warm, dry air and pass it through a water-soaked pad. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, releasing cooler, more humid air back into the room.

The primary components of an air cooler include a water tank, a pump, a fan, and absorbent pads. The pump circulates water from the tank to the pads, keeping them moist. The fan then pulls air through these wet pads, initiating the evaporative cooling process. This method is most effective in dry climates where the air can readily absorb moisture. In humid environments, the cooling effect is significantly reduced because the air is already saturated with water vapor.

Air coolers are generally considered an environmentally friendly option due to their lower energy consumption and the absence of harmful refrigerants. They also add moisture to the air, which can be beneficial in dry conditions, helping to alleviate issues like dry skin and irritated sinuses. However, their cooling capacity is generally less powerful than that of refrigerant-based air conditioners, making them more suitable for smaller spaces or for individuals who prefer a milder cooling effect. Maintenance typically involves refilling the water tank and cleaning or replacing the absorbent pads periodically.
