Illatészlelés, also known as olfaction, is the sensory process by which we detect and recognize smells. It involves specialized receptors in the nose that bind to odorant molecules present in the air. These molecules then trigger a series of signals that are transmitted to the brain, where they are interpreted as distinct scents.

The human olfactory system is remarkably sensitive, capable of distinguishing between thousands of different odors. This ability plays a crucial role in various aspects of our lives, including identifying food, detecting danger such as smoke or gas, and influencing our social interactions and emotional responses. Our sense of smell is closely linked to memory and emotion, often evoking vivid recollections of past experiences.

The process begins with the inhalation of air containing odorant molecules. These molecules travel up into the nasal cavity, where they encounter the olfactory epithelium. Here, olfactory receptor neurons, each equipped with cilia, detect specific odorants. When an odorant molecule binds to a receptor, it initiates an electrical signal. This signal travels along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb in the brain, which then relays the information to other brain regions, including the amygdala (involved in emotion) and the hippocampus (involved in memory).

Disruptions to illatészlelés can occur due to various factors, including aging, head injuries, viral infections like the common cold or COVID-19, and certain neurological conditions. A diminished or lost sense of smell, known as hyposmia or anosmia, can significantly impact quality of life by affecting appetite, safety awareness, and social connections.
