Ikonologisch, or iconological in English, refers to an approach in art history and cultural analysis that studies visual images within their symbolic and historical context. It goes beyond mere subject matter to interpret how images convey ideas, beliefs, and social relations.

The term derives from the Greek roots eikon (image) and logos (study or discourse). In German-language scholarship it is used to describe methods that align with the broader field of iconology, a term popularized in the 20th century by scholars such as Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky. Warburg introduced the idea that images carry motifs and patterns across time and cultures, while Panofsky articulated a three-tier analytical framework—pre-iconographic description, iconographic analysis, and iconological interpretation—that seeks to reveal the underlying cultural ideologies shaping a visual work.

Methodologically, ikonologische analysis emphasizes symbolic meaning, motifs, patronage, audience, and the cultural codes of a historical moment. It treats works of art as products of social power, religious beliefs, political structures, and intellectual currents, and it often requires interdisciplinary sources such as philosophy, theology, literature, and social history. This approach has been applied to a wide range of media, including Renaissance altarpieces, medieval manuscripts, classical sculpture, as well as modern painting, cinema, and photography.

Iconology is distinguished from iconography in that iconography describes the subject matter and recognizable motifs, while ikonologische analysis seeks to interpret the significance of those motifs within broader cultural and historical contexts. Critics caution against overinterpretation and stress the need for careful sourcing and contextualization.
