Warburg

Warburg is a town in the district of Höxter, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Warburg is also a surname associated with a prominent German-Jewish banking family from Hamburg, influential in European finance in the 19th and 20th centuries. Notable members include Max Warburg, Paul Warburg, Felix Warburg, and Aby Warburg, the latter founder of the Warburg Institute.

The Warburg Institute in London, founded in 1902 by Aby Warburg, houses a large library and conducts research in art history, religious studies, and cultural history.

Otto Warburg (1883–1970) was a German physiologist who received the 1931 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the nature and mode of action of the respiratory enzymes. The Warburg effect describes the tendency of cancer cells to rely on glycolysis for energy production even when oxygen is available.
