Ikkefokusable is a term used in user interface design to describe elements that cannot receive keyboard focus. It is commonly used in accessibility discussions to distinguish between components that participate in the keyboard navigation order and those that do not.

In web interfaces, non-focusable elements include plain block or inline content such as div, span, p, and most images, unless they are made interactive. Focusable elements include links with href, buttons, input fields, textareas, selects, and any element with a tabindex value that allows focus. A tabindex of -1 removes an element from the tab order but does not prevent it from receiving focus programmatically.

Why it matters: Proper focus management supports keyboard users and screen readers. When a page updates dynamically or a modal opens, shifting focus to a relevant control or to a meaningful region helps orientation. Conversely, making non-interactive content focusable can confuse users and disrupt accessibility.

Best practices: Prefer semantic HTML so default focus behavior is correct. Avoid adding tabindex to non-interactive elements unless there is a clear purpose. When building custom widgets, manage focus intentionally and provide visible focus indicators. Test navigation with a keyboard and ensure logical focus order and the availability of skip links.
