Ikerterhességek, also known as twin pregnancies, occur when a woman carries more than one fetus at the same time. The most common type is dizygotic twins, resulting from the fertilization of two separate eggs by two separate sperm, leading to fraternal twins. These twins can be of the same or different sexes and share about 50% of their genetic material, similar to regular siblings.

Monozygotic twins, often referred to as identical twins, arise from a single fertilized egg that splits into two embryos. This splitting can occur at different stages of development, influencing whether the twins share a placenta and/or amniotic sac. Identical twins share nearly 100% of their genetic material and are always of the same sex.

The diagnosis of twin pregnancies is typically made through ultrasound, usually in the first trimester. Signs and symptoms of pregnancy may be more pronounced in twin gestations, including earlier and more intense morning sickness and a faster-growing uterus.

Twin pregnancies carry a higher risk of certain complications compared to singleton pregnancies. These can include preterm birth, low birth weight, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and placental problems. However, with appropriate prenatal care and monitoring, many twin pregnancies result in healthy outcomes. The management of twin pregnancies often involves more frequent medical check-ups and ultrasounds to monitor the growth and well-being of both fetuses.
