Ihonväri refers to the natural pigmentation of human skin. It is primarily determined by the amount and type of melanin, a pigment produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. The variation in skin color among different human populations is a result of evolutionary adaptation to varying levels of UV exposure. Populations living in regions with intense sunlight, closer to the equator, tend to have darker skin due to higher melanin production. This provides greater protection against sunburn, DNA damage, and skin cancer. Conversely, populations from regions with less sunlight, farther from the equator, generally have lighter skin, which allows for more efficient Vitamin D synthesis in the skin.

While melanin is the primary determinant, other factors can influence skin color. These include the presence of other pigments like carotene and hemoglobin, as well as blood flow to the skin. Skin color can also change due to environmental factors such as sun exposure (tanning) or medical conditions, and can be influenced by genetics, age, and hormonal changes. The spectrum of human skin tones is vast and continuous, ranging from very light to very dark.
