Idrometallurgy is a branch of hydrometallurgy that deals with the extraction of metals using aqueous solutions. This process involves using water or other aqueous solutions to dissolve and separate metals from their ores or other materials. It is distinct from pyrometallurgy, which uses high temperatures, and electrometallurgy, which uses electricity.

The core principle of idrometallurgy is leaching, where a solvent is used to selectively dissolve the desired metal from a solid material. Common leaching agents include acids, bases, and salt solutions. The choice of leaching agent depends on the specific metal and the ore composition. Once the metal is dissolved into the aqueous solution, it can be separated from the remaining solid material through processes like filtration or sedimentation.

After leaching, the metal is recovered from the pregnant leach solution. Common recovery methods include solvent extraction, ion exchange, precipitation, and electrolysis. Solvent extraction involves using an immiscible organic solvent to selectively transfer the metal ions from the aqueous phase to the organic phase. Ion exchange utilizes resins that selectively adsorb metal ions from the solution. Precipitation involves chemically altering the solution to cause the metal to form a solid precipitate, which can then be filtered out. Electrolysis uses an electric current to deposit the metal onto a cathode.

Idrometallurgy is widely used for the extraction of various metals, including copper, gold, silver, nickel, cobalt, and zinc. It is often favored for low-grade ores or complex mineral assemblages where pyrometallurgical methods might be less efficient or environmentally damaging. The processes can be operated at or near ambient temperatures, reducing energy consumption compared to high-temperature methods. However, idrometallurgical processes can generate significant volumes of wastewater and require careful management of reagents and waste streams to minimize environmental impact.
