Ideggyöksérülés, also known as radiculopathy, refers to damage or irritation of a nerve root as it exits the spinal column. This condition can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the area of the body served by that specific nerve root. The most common cause of ideggyöksérülés is a herniated disc, where the soft inner material of an intervertebral disc protrudes and presses on the nerve root. Other causes include spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal canal, bone spurs (osteophytes), and degenerative disc disease.

Symptoms of ideggyöksérülés depend on the location and severity of the nerve root compression. For example, compression of a cervical nerve root in the neck can lead to pain radiating down the arm, while compression of a lumbar nerve root in the lower back can cause pain that travels down the leg (sciatica). Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and may include imaging studies such as MRI or CT scans to visualize the spine and identify the source of nerve compression. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) can also help assess nerve function.

Treatment for ideggyöksérülés aims to relieve pressure on the nerve root and reduce inflammation. Conservative treatments often include rest, pain medication, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physical therapy, and corticosteroid injections. In cases where conservative measures are not effective or the condition is severe, surgical intervention may be considered to decompress the affected nerve root. Surgery can involve removing herniated disc material, widening the spinal canal, or removing bone spurs. The prognosis for ideggyöksérülés varies depending on the underlying cause and the effectiveness of treatment.
