Icondependent is a term used in UX design to describe interfaces that rely on icons as the primary carriers of meaning, with little or no text labels. The term can function as an adjective (icondependent interface) or as a noun (an icondependent design). In such interfaces, icons are designed to be quickly recognizable and are often drawn from standardized icon sets. Textual hints may be reduced to tooltips or captions, or omitted entirely in compact layouts.

Proponents argue that icondependent designs offer benefits: they save space, support quick visual scanning, and enable language-neutral interfaces that work across diverse user populations. They can also improve consistency when a common icon set is used across products.

However, icondependence raises accessibility and usability concerns. Icons can be ambiguous or culturally specific, and users with visual impairments may rely on text labels or screen readers that are not available. Inconsistent iconography and poor icon design can increase cognitive load and reduce learnability, especially for new users. As a result, many icondependent interfaces combine icons with text labels, provide optional or contextual text, and include accessibility features such as descriptive tooltips or aria-labels.

Icondependent design is particularly common in mobile apps and dashboards, where space is at a premium and icon fonts or vector icons are used to represent actions, categories, or navigation. It coexists with more text-rich approaches and with hybrid patterns that balance iconography with readable labels.
