Ickevåldskommunikation, often abbreviated NVC, is a communication framework developed by Marshall B. Rosenberg. It is based on the premise that all human beings have the capacity for compassion and that violent, or hurtful, communication stems from a lack of awareness of our own and others' needs. The process of NVC involves four key components: observations, feelings, needs, and requests.

Observations involve stating what one sees or hears without evaluation or judgment. Feelings refer to identifying and expressing emotions associated with the observation. Needs are the underlying universal human needs that are either met or unmet, driving these feelings. Finally, requests are specific, actionable, and positive statements of what one would like to happen to meet those needs.

The goal of ickevåldskommunikation is to foster understanding, empathy, and connection. It is not about manipulation or forcing others to comply, but rather about creating a space where both parties can express themselves honestly and be heard. By focusing on needs rather than blame or judgment, NVC aims to resolve conflicts constructively and build stronger relationships. It can be applied in various contexts, including personal relationships, workplaces, and even international relations. The practice encourages self-awareness and the ability to connect with oneself as well as others on a deeper level.
