Ichthyoplankton is a term used for the free-floating eggs and larval stages of fishes that inhabit aquatic environments. It encompasses fish eggs, which are often pelagic and buoyant, as well as newly hatched larvae that drift with the water column during early development. Ichthyoplankton is a key component of plankton and occurs in oceans, seas, and many large freshwater systems where spawning takes place.

Development among species is highly variable. Most fish begin life as externally fertilized eggs that hatch into larvae after a species-specific period. Eggs may possess buoyancy adaptations such as lipid-rich yolk or gelatinous envelopes. Larvae undergo rapid growth and morphological change, progressing from yolk-sac–dependent hatchlings to feeding larvae and later to postflexion stages as they resemble juveniles. Growth and survival depend on factors including temperature, salinity, food availability, and predation.

Ecologically, ichthyoplankton forms a critical link between primary production and adult fish populations. It contributes to nutrient cycling and supports higher trophic levels by transferring energy from the base of the food web to predatory species. Abundances and distributions of ichthyoplankton reflect spawning success and broader ecosystem health. Oceanographic conditions and water masses influence where eggs and larvae are transported, which in turn affects recruitment to populations and fisheries.

Researchers study ichthyoplankton with specialized sampling gear and nets designed to capture delicate eggs and small larvae at various depths. Identification uses morphology and increasingly molecular methods such as DNA barcoding. Data from ichthyoplankton surveys inform stock assessments, biodiversity monitoring, and marine management and conservation planning.
