Hypopigmentation refers to a condition where the skin, hair, or eyes are lighter than normal. This lightening occurs due to a reduction in melanin, the pigment responsible for coloring these tissues. Melanin is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. Hypopigmentation can affect individuals of any age and can manifest in various ways, from small, localized patches to widespread depigmentation.

The causes of hypopigmentation are diverse and can include genetic factors, autoimmune disorders, injuries to the skin, or certain infections. Albinism, a genetic disorder characterized by a complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes, is a well-known example of generalized hypopigmentation. Vitiligo is another common condition where melanocytes are destroyed, leading to the formation of depigmented patches on the skin. Scarring from burns, wounds, or inflammatory skin conditions can also result in hypopigmented areas because the damaged skin may produce less melanin. Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation can occur after conditions like eczema or psoriasis have healed. The appearance of hypopigmentation can range from subtle lightening to complete absence of color. While often a cosmetic concern, hypopigmentation can sometimes be associated with increased sensitivity to sunlight due to the lack of melanin's protective properties, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin cancer in affected areas. Diagnosis typically involves a visual examination by a healthcare professional, and sometimes further tests may be needed to determine the underlying cause. Treatment options, if any, depend on the specific cause and may include topical medications, phototherapy, or cosmetic camouflage.
