Húgycsőizom is a Hungarian term that translates to "urethral sphincter" in English. This refers to a group of muscles surrounding the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. These muscles play a crucial role in controlling the release of urine.

There are two primary urethral sphincters: the internal urethral sphincter and the external urethral sphincter. The internal sphincter is an involuntary smooth muscle, meaning it operates automatically without conscious control. It remains closed to prevent urine leakage and relaxes when the bladder is full, signaling the urge to urinate.

The external urethral sphincter is a voluntary skeletal muscle, allowing for conscious control over urination. This sphincter is crucial for delaying urination until an appropriate time and place. When the urge to urinate is felt, a person can consciously contract the external sphincter to hold urine. Relaxation of this muscle, along with relaxation of the detrusor muscle of the bladder, allows for micturition, the process of emptying the bladder.

Disruptions to the function of the urethral sphincters can lead to incontinence, the involuntary loss of urine. This can be caused by various factors, including aging, childbirth, neurological conditions, or injury. Medical interventions and therapies are often employed to manage and treat such conditions.
