Høyspentkraft, often translated as high-voltage power, refers to electrical power transmitted at a voltage significantly higher than what is typically used in homes and businesses. This high voltage is a crucial element in the efficient transmission of electricity over long distances. The primary reason for using high voltage is to minimize energy loss during transmission. When electricity flows through conductors, some energy is dissipated as heat due to electrical resistance. This power loss is proportional to the square of the current. By increasing the voltage, the current required to transmit the same amount of power can be significantly reduced, thereby drastically lowering energy losses.

The generation of electricity typically occurs at moderate voltages. Before transmission over long distances, this voltage is stepped up to very high levels, often hundreds of kilovolts, using transformers at substations. This high-voltage power is then carried by overhead power lines or underground cables.
