Høyspentkraft, often translated as high-voltage power, refers to electrical power transmitted at a voltage significantly higher than what is typically used in homes and businesses. This high voltage is a crucial element in the efficient transmission of electricity over long distances. The primary reason for using high voltage is to minimize energy loss during transmission. When electricity flows through conductors, some energy is dissipated as heat due to electrical resistance. This power loss is proportional to the square of the current. By increasing the voltage, the current required to transmit the same amount of power can be significantly reduced, thereby drastically lowering energy losses.

The generation of electricity typically occurs at moderate voltages. Before transmission over long distances, this voltage is stepped up to very high levels, often hundreds of kilovolts, using transformers at substations. This high-voltage power is then carried by overhead power lines or underground cables. Upon reaching its destination, the voltage is gradually stepped down in stages by transformers at local substations and then distribution points to levels suitable for industrial, commercial, and residential use. Standard household voltages in many parts of the world are around 120 or 230 volts. The entire system of generation, transmission at high voltage, and distribution at lower voltages is known as the power grid.
