Hardness data refers to numerical measurements that quantify a material's resistance to indentation or scratching. These values are typically obtained through standardized hardness tests such as Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers, Knoop, and Shore hardness tests. Each test yields a numeric value on a specific scale (for example HRC, HV, HB, HK, or Shore D), often accompanied by the testing conditions.

Data records usually include the material identifier (name, grade, supplier), treatment history (heat treatment, coating), sample geometry, indenter type, applied load, dwell time, temperature, surface finish, and the date of measurement. The hardness value is thus part of a larger data row in a dataset, and units and scale must be explicit to allow comparisons across sources.

Standards from ISO and ASTM govern how tests are performed and reported; examples include methods for Rockwell, Brinell, and Vickers tests and guidelines on calibration and instrument maintenance. Data quality depends on proper calibration, surface preparation, and awareness of material anisotropy and temperature effects. Cross-method comparisons require conversion or normalization, and sometimes multi-method datasets are used for robust property modeling.

Uses include material selection, quality control, failure analysis, and computational modeling of mechanical properties. Hardness data is often integrated with other material properties (for example correlations with tensile strength) to predict performance in service. Publicly available databases and lab systems structure hardness data with metadata to support traceability and reuse.
