Hätäsektio, also known as an emergency Cesarean section, is a surgical procedure to deliver a baby when either the mother's or the baby's life is in immediate danger. This is a critical intervention that requires rapid decision-making and execution by the medical team. The reasons for a hätäsektio can vary greatly and often arise unexpectedly during labor or late pregnancy.

Common indications for an emergency C-section include fetal distress, where the baby is not tolerating labor well and their heart rate shows signs of compromise. Placental abruption, the premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall, is another serious condition that can necessitate a hätäsektio. Uterine rupture, a rare but life-threatening event where the uterus tears, also requires immediate surgical delivery.

Other situations that might lead to a hätäsektio include severe preeclampsia or eclampsia, complications that cause dangerously high blood pressure in the mother. If labor progresses extremely slowly or stops altogether and the baby cannot be safely delivered vaginally, an emergency C-section may be performed. In some cases, a prolapsed umbilical cord, where the cord slips down in front of the baby, can cause cord compression and require urgent delivery. The surgical team prioritizes the safety of both mother and child, and the decision for a hätäsektio is made only when it is deemed the safest and most effective method of delivery in a critical situation.
