Härdningsförmåga is a Swedish term that translates to "hardenability" in English. It describes the ability of a steel to form martensite, a very hard and brittle phase, when quenched from its austenite state. This property is crucial in determining the depth to which a steel can be hardened and the resulting strength and toughness of the material.

Hardenability is not the same as hardness. Hardness refers to a material's resistance to scratching or indentation, while hardenability is about the depth of hardness penetration achievable. A steel with high hardenability can be hardened to a greater depth, even with slower cooling rates, compared to a steel with low hardenability, which requires very rapid cooling to achieve significant hardness.

Several factors influence hardenability, including the chemical composition of the steel, particularly the presence of alloying elements like chromium, molybdenum, manganese, and nickel. These elements slow down the transformation of austenite into softer phases like pearlite and bainite, allowing more time for martensite to form during cooling. The grain size of the austenite also plays a role; finer grains generally lead to higher hardenability.

Hardenability is typically measured using standardized tests, such as the Jominy end-quench test. This test involves heating a steel specimen to its austenitizing temperature and then quenching one end with a jet of water. The hardness is then measured along the length of the specimen, providing a curve that represents the hardenability of the steel. This information is essential for selecting the appropriate steel for a given application and for designing appropriate heat treatment processes to achieve desired mechanical properties.
