Hyponitriles are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a functional group containing a nitrogen atom bonded to a carbon atom with a triple bond, specifically the –C≡N–H structure. They are closely related to nitriles (R–C≡N) but differ in that they contain an additional hydrogen atom directly attached to the carbon of the nitrile group. This subtle structural distinction gives hyponitriles unique chemical properties and reactivity compared to their nitrile counterparts.

The general formula for hyponitriles is R–C≡N–H, where R represents an organic group such as an alkyl or aryl substituent.
