Hypokrom, often used as a variant of hypochromic, is a hematologic term describing erythrocytes with reduced hemoglobin content. On textbook peripheral blood smears stained with Wright or Giemsa, hypochromic cells show increased central pallor and a paler cytoplasm due to lower hemoglobin concentration. In automated testing, hypochromia is typically reflected by a decreased mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC).
