Hypohypertyreoosi is a medical term that refers to a condition where the thyroid gland is overactive, producing too much thyroid hormone. This condition is more commonly known as hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces hormones that regulate metabolism, which is the process by which the body converts food into energy. When there is an excess of thyroid hormone, the body's metabolic rate speeds up significantly.

Several factors can lead to hypohypertyreoosi. The most common cause is Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to enlarge and overproduce hormones. Other causes include thyroid nodules that produce excess hormones (toxic nodular goiter), inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis), and excessive intake of thyroid hormone medication.

The symptoms of hypohypertyreoosi can vary from person to person but often include unexplained weight loss, rapid or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, anxiety, tremors, increased sweating, and difficulty sleeping. Individuals may also experience changes in bowel habits, such as more frequent bowel movements, and increased sensitivity to heat. In some cases, eye changes, such as bulging eyes (exophthalmos), can occur, particularly in Graves' disease.

Diagnosis of hypohypertyreoosi typically involves a physical examination, blood tests to measure thyroid hormone levels (T3 and T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and sometimes imaging tests like thyroid scans or ultrasounds. Treatment aims to reduce the amount of thyroid hormone produced. Options include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy which destroys thyroid cells, or surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. The choice of treatment depends on the cause, severity, and individual patient factors.
