Hylsykkeitä are the metallic containers used in firearm cartridges to hold the propellant and the projectile. They provide a seal for the chamber, contain the primer, and transfer the pressure generated by the propellant to the bullet or shot. When a round is fired, the case expands to seal the chamber and is then ejected from the firearm.

Most hylsykkeitä are made from brass, a copper-zinc alloy, chosen for its combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and ability to be resized for reloads. Other materials, such as steel, aluminum, or polymer blends, are used in some commercially produced rounds, especially for cost-sensitive or specialty applications. The case design varies, with rimmed, rimless, or semi-rimmed configurations commonly seen across calibers. The base of the case carries a headstamp that identifies the manufacturer, caliber, and often the year of production.

Inside the case is a primer pocket where a small primer is seated. The primer initiates the principal explosive reaction when struck by the firearm’s firing pin. Cartridges may use Boxer or Berdan primer systems, which differ in how the priming compound is arranged and serviced. The case mouth is crimped or otherwise secured to hold the bullet in place until firing.

Manufacturing involves forming the case shape through drawing and annealing processes, followed by trimming and quality checks. Many hylsykkeitä are designed to be reloadable; shooters may resize, clean, and trim cases for multiple uses, though repeated sizing can eventually degrade the case.

Spent hylsykkeitä are typically recycled, especially brass, which is widely collected at ranges and recycled into new cases, contributing to material efficiency and environmental considerations. Safety guidelines advise proper handling and disposal following local regulations.
