Hydroxyvalerate refers to the hydroxyvalerate moiety, typically 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV), a five-carbon hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative. In polymer chemistry, 3HV is most commonly encountered as a monomer unit in polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a family of biodegradable polyesters produced by certain microorganisms.

In PHAs, 3-hydroxyvalerate is incorporated alongside other hydroxyalkanoate units, most notably 3-hydroxybutyrate, to form copolymers such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV). The HV content in PHBV influences material properties: higher HV fractions generally reduce crystallinity and melting temperature, and can increase toughness and flexibility, allowing the polymer to be tailored for specific applications.

Biosynthesis of hydroxyvalerate-containing PHAs occurs in bacteria via the PHA biosynthetic pathway. The production and composition of HV units can be influenced by the carbon source, such as valerate, propionate, or other precursors, as well as by the microbial strain and fermentation conditions. This enables engineering of biopolymers with desired mechanical and thermal characteristics for biodegradable plastics.

Applications of hydroxyvalerate-containing PHAs include environmentally friendly packaging materials, consumer goods, and certain medical devices where biocompatibility and biodegradability are advantageous. As a component of PHAs, hydroxyvalerate contributes to the versatility of these biopolymers, supporting alternatives to conventional petrochemical plastics.
