Hydrotropism is the directional growth response of plant roots toward sources of moisture. It is primarily observed as a positive hydrotropic response, where roots bend toward higher water potential gradients in soil. While roots are most commonly studied, some shoots can also display hydrotropic tendencies, but these are less well understood and generally weaker than root responses.

Mechanisms and signals underlying hydrotropism are not fully resolved. The root cap and the growing root apex are thought to perceive moisture differences and initiate signaling that directs elongation on the side of the root closer to higher moisture. In Arabidopsis, the MIZ1 gene has been identified as important for hydrotropic signaling, indicating a genetic basis for the response. Hormonal involvement appears variable; auxin transport and distribution may influence hydrotropic bending in some species, but other studies show hydrotropism can occur independently of auxin distribution. Abscisic acid and other hydraulic signals are also implicated in mediating the response, particularly under water deficit conditions. The exact interplay between hydraulic changes, hormone signaling, and gene regulation remains an active area of research.

Ecological and agricultural relevance is significant: hydrotropism helps root systems locate underground moisture, aiding seedling establishment and drought survival. It interacts with other tropisms, such as gravitropism and thigmotropism, to shape root architecture in heterogeneous soils. Hydrotropism is typically studied using controlled moisture gradients, and its strength varies with species, soil conditions, and environmental factors such as salinity and temperature.
