The field also covers hydraulic structures such as gates, spillways, turbines, penstocks, siphons, and pumps, as well as river training, groundwater management, and watershed infrastructure.

Design and analysis rely on hydraulic engineering principles, computational fluid dynamics, hydraulic modelling, and physical scale models. Engineers assess flood routing, sediment transport, seepage and stability, environmental impact, and safety. Operations focus on monitoring and maintenance, emergency planning, and adapting facilities to changing hydrological conditions and climate risks.
