Hydrometrics is the science of measuring and analyzing the properties and processes of water in natural and engineered systems. It encompasses surface and groundwater, focusing on quantities such as flow, water level, and velocity, as well as water quality and sediment transport. The field supports hydrology, hydraulics, and water-resource management.

Measurement methods rely on instrumentation and standardized procedures. Field gauging stations record water level and discharge; discharge is often obtained by velocity-area methods, or via weirs and flumes. Modern networks use acoustic Doppler devices, stage recorders, and automated sondes for continuous data. Groundwater hydrometrics use piezometers and hydraulic-head measurements, while water-quality monitoring employs sensors for temperature, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and related parameters. Remote sensing and tracer studies supplement in situ measurements.

Key concepts include the stage-discharge relationship (rating curve), hydrographs, and storage-discharge dynamics. In groundwater, hydraulic head, gradient, and recharge are central. Data are used to compute flood forecasts, design hydraulic structures, assess drought risk, and track ecosystem health. Quality control, uncertainty analysis, and metadata documentation are essential for reliable datasets.

Hydrometrics relies on international and national standards to ensure comparability and interoperability of data. Organizations such as meteorological services and standards bodies publish guidance on measurement methods, calibration, data quality, and data sharing. Historical gauging programs began in the 19th century and have evolved with automation, telemetry, and satellite-based observations.
