Hydrokemia refers to a medical condition in which there is an abnormal concentration of sodium in the blood. The term can also refer to various related disorders that involve an electrolyte imbalance, particularly with regards to sodium and water levels in the body.

The condition is typically identified through laboratory tests that measure the levels of sodium in the blood. In a healthy individual, sodium concentration in the blood is usually around 135-145 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). In individuals with hydrokemia, the sodium concentration can be significantly higher, often exceeding 150 mmol/L.

Hydrokemia can result from a variety of factors, including dehydration, excessive sweating, excessive sodium intake, or certain medical conditions such as heart failure, kidney failure, or liver cirrhosis. In some cases, hydrokemia can also be caused by hormonal imbalances, such as those resulting from the use of certain diuretic medications or excess secretion of aldosterone.

If left untreated, hydrokemia can increase the risk of serious complications, such as seizures, muscle weakness, and even coma. Treatment usually involves administering intravenous fluids or oral rehydration therapy to restore electrolyte balance. In more severe cases, hospitalization and management by a healthcare professional may be required.

It is worth noting that while the term 'hydrokemia' is sometimes used interchangeably with 'hypernatremia', they are not exactly synonymous. While both refer to excessive sodium in the blood, hypernatremia specifically refers to a condition of abnormally high levels of sodium.
